Dear Director of Admissions:

Arnold is an extraordinary human being. He has a seeminglyinexhaustible optimism and enthusiasm for other people. He ispleasantly naive and innocent. At this stage of life he lacks arational, critical perspective. He seems indiscriminately acceptingof others, tolerant of all possibilities and human vagaries.

Yet he is open to the ideas of others and eminently genuine in hisresponse to them. He loves travel, music, good food, architecture, history, and nature. There is little in life he does not appreciate, often superficially, but always enthusiastically. He speaks, reads, and writes French with great sophistication.

As a student, Arnold's naivete somewhat limits his grasp of matureliterature. He was ready to discuss plot when everyone else wasinterested in motivation, irony, technique, structure, and style.Nonetheless, he understood ideas pointed out by his fellow studentsin discussions. He always seemed pleasantly surprised that there wassomething else in the reading that he had failed to see. His failureto read with maturity was rarely disheartening to him. It simplyredoubled his enthusiasm for the possibility of other things. As awriter, Arnold is merely competent, principally because he lacks amature and complex content in his papers. Some day he will be quiteproficient.

Arnold is a talented comic actor, an excellent and devoted singer, and a superb practitioner of the French language. He is gentle, gracious, sensitive--a thoroughly delightful young man. We have hadhim often in our home as a guest. He is responsive to children andquickly becomes one of the family. As a person, he ranks among thefinest young persons I have known in twenty years of teaching.

Sincerely yours,
